| Dobbins Island Summary |
| Dobbins Island is located in Maryland’s Magothy River just west of Gibson Island and the Chesapeake Bay. It has long been a gem of this river for its natural beauty, wildlife habitat and its recreational use by residents and visitors alike. Boats of all types and sizes have anchored at the island for decades combining island exploration with swimming and other relaxing activities. While always under private ownership, no attempts to develop the island were made until a recent ownership change occurred. A pier has now been erected from the island and a permit application, which includes variance requests, has been filed to construct a house. Should this be approved, it is also likely that underwater electric cables will be laid, possibly eliminating the historic anchorage enjoyed by generations of Marylanders. The Magothy River Association (MRA) has been opposed to construction on the island as it is not believed buildable under State and Local law. There is now a possibility that government might be able to purchase the island and have it included as part of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. The MRA, in order to show our local, state and federal officials that the citizens of Maryland and other visitors are in favor of such a plan, has initiated this petition drive. |
